The MH-60S Nighthawk was originally planned as a replacement helicopter for the CH-46 Sea Knight, but it was developed as a multi-mission helicopter with additional combat search and rescue missions, and applications for minesweeping as well. Based on the UH-60L Black Hawk, the cockpit is the same as the MH-60R and is designed to port the HH-60H system. Development was begun in 2002, and the Navy plans to integrate the H-60 helicopter into two MH-60R and MH-60S versions for patrol missions.
